Book Review: Vampire Academy – Richelle Mead

600full-vampire-academy-(vampire-academy,-book-1)-cover

Lissa Dragomir is a Moroi princess: a mortal vampire with a rare gift for harnessing the earth’s magic. She must be protected at all times from Strigoi; the fiercest vampires – the ones who never die. The powerful blend of human and vampire blood that flows through Rose Hathaway, Lissa’s best friend, makes her a dhampir. Rose is dedicated to a dangerous life of protecting Lissa from the Strigoi, who are hell-bent on making Lissa one of them.

After two years of freedom, Rose and Lissa are caught and dragged back to St. Vladimir’s Academy, a school for vampire royalty and their guardians-to-be, hidden in the deep forests of Montana. But inside the iron gates, life is even more fraught with danger . . . and the Strigoi are always close by.”

Okay, Please don’t strike me down BUT I absolutely adore this series (yeah I know I go on about it quite a bit), yes, It’s about vampires but It’s nothing like your ‘original’ vampire stories. I just want to point out that I have at least read this series (yes allย 6 books) at least 4 times in my (preteenย and teen) lifetime (no I’m not bragging). Is that a sad thing to establish? No, not really, Because Mead does an amazing job with these books and really with any book that she writes. Her characters are just amazing, they feel real and they act real (and I would like to say in some cases they are real, don’t be freaked out because it’s mainly in my head).

I first found these books in my school library. Now I would like to actually ask my librarians wetherย this was a good idea because there is quite a lot of sexual things going on in these books (and many of her others are situated around this as well) and I did go to a private catholic school, like seriously, wereย my overly catholic teachers out of it when they put it on the shelf??! Not that I’m complaining, I did feel like a bit of a rebel without a cause carrying this book around. Even the covers looked as if something saucy was going on (seriously look up the original covers they are the bomb). But this is besides the point.

I just want to re-establish what I previously said when I was waffling, Richelle Mead is Amazing. Like, capitalise, bold and italic that world. She has a way of drawing you into the story, making it really hard to put the book down. Her characterisation is just (are you going to say amazing again bec? YES I AM) Amazing, as recently stated, I said that her characters feel and act like real people. The main protagonist in this book Rose is a bad ass, a women with attitude. She is everything I have ever wanted to be. In this book Rose has a lot of opportunities to grow and enhance her character and this is clearly evident throughout the whole series.

This book shows a very early Rose Hathaway, who is naive to the world and the consequences of her actions. I really loved reading this book because I connected really well with the characters and I felt as if they were real. The plot overall of this book is a good place to start, it opens up the vampire world that Mead has created and slowly eases you into it. When I first read this book (I want to point out that I didn’t read it in the correct order) I kind of had an idea of what was going to happen so the ‘plot twist’ wasn’t really a twist. The pace in this book is pretty good, action instantly happens literally on the first chapter and following. However there are some parts that make me want to nod off, but they usually don’t last very long!
